The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has commended Governor Uba Sani for approving ₦3.65 billion for the payment of pensions, gratuities and death benefits to retirees and families of deceased public servants.
The union said the latest payment had provided relief to pensioners and families of deceased workers across the state.
Aboman Ladan, NUP chairman, and Alhassan Balarabe Musa, secretary, expressed the appreciation in a letter made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Monday.
The union said the latest intervention covered 1,339 beneficiaries under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
It also commended the governor for the cumulative payment of ₦21.45 billion to 9,683 beneficiaries since he assumed office in May 2023.
According to the pensioners, the payments demonstrated the administration’s commitment to addressing outstanding pension liabilities and improving the welfare of retired workers.
The union recalled Sani’s position that pension payments were an obligation rather than a favour.
“Pension payment is not a favour. It is an obligation,” the governor had said.
The NUP said the administration’s commitment to fulfilling its pension obligations would remain memorable to retirees who served the state.
Ahmed Maiyaki, commissioner for information and culture, had earlier disclosed that the governor approved ₦3.65 billion for pension, gratuity and death benefit payments across the Kaduna State and Local Government Services.
According to Maiyaki, ₦515 million was approved for 210 local government retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
He said ₦3.14 billion was approved under the Contributory Pension Scheme for 1,129 beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries under the CPS comprised 402 retirees from the state service and 727 retirees from local government councils.
Maiyaki said the latest intervention underscored the administration’s sustained efforts to systematically address outstanding pension liabilities.
He added that the payments would strengthen the integrity and long-term sustainability of Kaduna State’s pension system.
