Academic activities are set to resume fully across three Lagos State-owned universities after lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off their industrial action.
In a joint statement released on Friday, the union directed its members at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) to return to classrooms with immediate effect.
The strike, according to the union, was embarked upon to press home demands for better welfare packages for its members and the full implementation of previously signed academic agreements with the Lagos State Government.
The lecturers had accused the government of delaying action on issues affecting their conditions of service.
The suspension was announced by the leadership of the three institutions: Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH.
The development is expected to bring huge relief to thousands of students and parents whose academic calendar was disrupted by the shutdown.
“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations,” the statement said.
ASUU expressed gratitude to groups and individuals who intervened during the deadlock, including the media, civil society organisations, the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, as well as traditional rulers who waded into the matter. The union also praised students and parents for their patience throughout the period.
