Academic and non-academic unions in three state-owned universities in Ondo State have suspended their four-week-old strike, directing members to resume duties on Tuesday.
The Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI) announced the suspension in a statement issued on Monday in Akure.
The affected institutions are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.
The committee, led by its Chairman, Tayo Ogungbeni, and Secretary, Kunle Akinwonmi, said the decision followed the intervention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the issues that triggered the industrial action.
“Following the financial intervention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the crisis that led to an indefinite strike on Sept. 2, 2026, we wish to inform the general public that the indefinite strike is hereby suspended with effect from Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026,” the statement read.
The unions commended Aiyedatiwa, Igbekele Ajibefun, commissioner for education, science and technology, and Bola Taiwo, special adviser to the governor on special duties and union matters, for their efforts toward resolving the dispute.
JAC-ODSTI, however, urged the managements of the affected universities to address the non-financial aspects of the Federal Government-varsity unions agreement.
The committee said addressing the outstanding issues was necessary to prevent another round of industrial action in the institutions.
Confirming the development in a telephone interview with NAN on Monday, Boluwaji Oshodi, chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA branch, said the strike had been called off.
The industrial action began in early September after the state-owned tertiary institutions were shut down over the non-implementation of the Federal Government-varsity unions wage structure, including the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), subvention arrears and other staff welfare issues.
The suspension means academic and non-academic workers in the affected institutions are expected to return to their duties from Tuesday.
