Enugu Law Officers Begin Seven-Day Strike Over Welfare, Allowances

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Enugu State Chapter, has commenced a seven-day warning strike over the state government’s failure to address outstanding welfare and remuneration issues affecting its members.

The strike began at midnight on Friday, October 2, and will run for seven judicial days, with law officers directed to stop official duties in Government House, ministries, departments and agencies, as well as the association’s liaison offices in Abuja and Lagos. The action means members will not attend court or visit correctional centres, police stations and other law enforcement agencies in furtherance of their official duties.

The association announced the strike in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Mrs K.P. Onyia, and Secretary, Mr. M.O. Onyeze, in Enugu on Friday.

According to the association, the action followed prolonged efforts to get the government to address what it described as the plight of law officers in the state.

LOAN is demanding the full harmonisation of members’ remuneration, including that of magistrates.

The association also demanded the payment of members’ Bar Practising Fees and annual Bar Conference fees.

Other demands include the restoration and payment of several allowances and professional fees, including arrears of law officers’ transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances.

“During the strike, no law officer in Abuja or Lagos Liaison Offices, Government House or any Ministry, Department and Agency should be on duty, attend court, or visit correctional centres, police stations or other law enforcement agencies in furtherance of official duties,” the statement said.

The association added that law officers should refrain from carrying out government business in line with its collective resolution.

LOAN expressed hope that the seven-day warning strike would give the authorities an opportunity to address the outstanding demands and avert further industrial action.
