University Registrars Urge Federal Government to Pay Outstanding 35% Salary Arrears for Non-Teaching Staff

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU) has urged the Federal Government to urgently improve workers’ welfare in Nigerian universities, with a key demand for the immediate payment of outstanding arrears arising from the 35 per cent salary increase approved for non-teaching staff.

The demand was contained in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of ARNU’s 4th Annual Workshop and 79th Business Meeting, held from 6 to 10 July at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium in Abuja.

The meeting, which brought together registrars from federal, state, and private universities, focused on the future of university administration and the welfare of university workers.

Presenting the communiqué, the Chairman of the Communiqué Committee and Registrar of Bingham University, Daburi Bello Misal, said the association acknowledged the agreement signed between the Federal Government and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

“ARNU noted the signing of the agreement between the Federal Government and SSANU and urged the Government to ensure the implementation of the outstanding arrears arising from the 35 per cent salary increment approved for non-teaching staff of Nigerian universities with effect from 1 January 2026,” the communiqué stated.

Beyond salary-related concerns, the registrars called for improved welfare packages for retiring senior university administrators.

The association urged the Federal Government and university authorities to establish an enhanced post-retirement welfare framework for retiring registrars and bursars. According to ARNU, the framework should provide sustainable retirement benefits and “life salaries comparable to those enjoyed by retired professors”.

The association also called on the National Universities Commission and other relevant regulatory bodies to harmoniseprofessional cadres and nomenclature across Nigerian universities.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC), in collaboration with other relevant regulatory bodies, should harmoniseprofessional cadres and nomenclature across Nigerian universities to eliminate irregular and unauthorised offices created outside the approved career structure,” the communiqué added.
