The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has given the Katsina State Government a 15-day ultimatum to implement newly approved allowances for academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions.
Muhammad Nasir-Gidado, chairman of ASUP’s Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic chapter, announced this in a statement on Tuesday in Katsina.
He said the allowances, known as the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), followed an agreement between the union and the Federal Government.
The agreement, effective from January 2026, provides for the payment of the allowances to eligible academic staff.
Nasir-Gidado said the union reached the decision at its 118th National Executive Council meeting held on October 22.
He added that ASUP had formally communicated the agreement to state governments nationwide, requesting that they extend the benefits to academic staff in their polytechnics and other relevant institutions.
According to him, the union also issued a formal 15-day ultimatum to the Katsina State Government, which commenced on October 27.
The affected institutions include Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management, College of Health Sciences, Katsina, and College of Nursing Sciences, Katsina.
Nasir-Gidado appealed to Governor Dikko Radda to intervene and ensure the implementation of the allowances within the stipulated period.
He said academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions deserved the same benefits as their counterparts in federal institutions and urged the government to give the demand urgent attention.
