The Kano State Government says it has cleared ₦32 billion out of the ₦48 billion backlog of gratuities and related liabilities inherited by the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf.
Yusuf disclosed this on Thursday in his address at the state’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration in Kano.
The governor said his administration had also sustained regular payment of monthly pensions while increasing the minimum monthly pension from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000.
He said the government had prioritised the welfare of workers and pensioners through timely payment of salaries, improved remuneration and measures aimed at strengthening the public service.
According to Yusuf, the state has maintained the practice of paying workers’ salaries by the 25th of every month while implementing the ₦71,000 minimum wage for civil servants.
The governor said the administration was also sponsoring public servants for professional training programmes, including courses at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), to improve their administrative and leadership capacities.
He said the measures were designed to build a professional and motivated workforce while ensuring that the contributions of serving workers and retirees were recognised and treated with dignity.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening the state’s public service.
