PCRC Praises Transparent Police Recruitment, Cites Fairness and Strong Oversight

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has commended the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force for conducting a transparent and inclusive recruitment exercise, describing the process as a benchmark for fairness and accountability in public-sector hiring.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during an assessment visit to a recruitment centre, the PCRC National Chairman, Mr. Ibraheem Olaniyan, said the exercise demonstrates a commitment to equitable hiring practices and is likely to strengthen public confidence in police recruitment.

In a statement issued by the PCRC spokesperson, Mr. Olayemi Esan, Olaniyan noted that the committee’s active involvement in the nationwide screening exercise—alongside the PSC and other stakeholders—has enhanced credibility and minimised the risk of irregularities. He added that the approach is also designed to safeguard the rights of applicants, particularly indigenous residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while ensuring that recruitment slots are allocated fairly.

Olaniyan described the exercise in the FCT as both transparent and inclusive, emphasising that this marks the first time the PSC has formally involved the PCRC in the recruitment process. According to him, the presence of PCRC leaders, senior police officers, and representatives of civil society organisations has strengthened oversight mechanisms and reinforced procedural integrity.

“The presence of key stakeholders is aimed at ensuring fairness and protecting the rights of indigenous applicants,” he said, adding that the process is structured to prevent recruitment slots designated for FCT indigenes from being taken by applicants from other states.

The PCRC chairman expressed confidence in the calibre of candidates, describing them as “the best set of police constables in the history of Nigeria”. He congratulated the applicants in advance and urged them to remain focused throughout the screening stages.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, for his commitment to improving the welfare and professional development of junior police officers. According to Olaniyan, the Inspector-General continues to prioritise the needs of personnel at the grassroots level.

Olaniyan further praised the leadership of the PSC for facilitating the recruitment of 50,000 constables in a single exercise, describing it as an unprecedented milestone in the history of police recruitment.

He expressed optimism that the ongoing exercise would yield competent and dedicated officers capable of contributing meaningfully to national security.
