Oyo Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Rising Insecurity and School Abductions

By Samuel Ogunsona

Public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State have commenced an indefinite strike over growing insecurity in schools, with the action taking effect from Monday, 1 June 2026.

The industrial action, declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), follows a series of abductions involving teachers and pupils, which the union says have created widespread fear among educators and raised serious concerns about workplace safety within the state’s education sector.

In a statement jointly signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman Hassan Fatai and Secretary Salami Olukayode, the union stated that the continued captivity of abducted members of school communities has heightened anxiety among teachers and eroded confidence in the safety of the school system.

NUT President Audu Amba confirmed the directive, instructing all public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely.

“We have directed all teachers in Oyo State to remain at home starting from tomorrow (Monday),” Amba said.

According to the union, the worsening security situation has not only affected teachers but has also discouraged many parents from sending their children to school, thereby increasing tension within affected communities and disrupting learning activities.

The NUT directed teachers throughout the state to comply fully with the strike order, remain law-abiding, and prioritise their personal safety while staying away from classrooms during the period of industrial action.

The union stressed that the withdrawal of services was a direct response to the security threats confronting both educators and learners.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare, safety, and security of teachers and students nationwide, the union stated that protecting school communities remains one of its foremost priorities.

The NUT maintained that teachers in Oyo State would be unable to resume their duties until adequate measures are put in place to guarantee the safety of schools and their occupants.
