By Mariam Aligbeh

The Lagos State Government says it has trained 7,116 public servants over the past year as part of efforts to address skill gaps, improve productivity, and strengthen service delivery across the state civil service.

The Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, disclosed this on Monday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office, held in Alausa.

Ayantayo said the training programmes were specifically designed to improve operational efficiency across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) by addressing identified competency gaps among public servants.

According to him, the training covered 54 programmes, comprising 26 generic courses and 28 specialised skill-gap training sessions aimed at strengthening workforce capacity across the state public service.

He added that the ministry also processed 744 training sign-off requests from 148 MDAs during the period under review.

“The ministry has continued to prioritise human capital development to improve competence, productivity, and efficiency within the Lagos State Public Service,” he said.

Ayantayo further disclosed that 1,000 officers benefited from accelerated digital training programmes delivered in partnership with private-sector organisations.

He explained that the initiative was aimed at improving digital literacy, enhancing workplace productivity, and preparing officers for globally recognised certifications, in line with the state government’s digital transformation agenda.

The commissioner also said approximately 300 union leaders and stakeholders received training to strengthen labourrelations and sustain industrial harmony across the state.

On healthcare workforce support, Ayantayo revealed that 470 resident doctors received the 2025 residency training allowance, amounting to more than ₦456 million.

He noted that the payment reflects the government’s commitment to supporting healthcare professionals and strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce.
