ASUU-GSU Suspends Strike, Gives Gombe Govt Until October to Implement Pay Agreements

By Samuel Ogunsona

Lecturers at Gombe State University have put a planned indefinite strike on hold, opting instead to give the state government and school management more time to act on outstanding welfare issues.

The decision was reached at a congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, GSU branch, held on Friday, August 21, 2026.

In a resolution signed by the branch Chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng, the union said it considered two key developments, a letter from the Gombe State Government on rolling out the new salary scale for academic staff, and an MoU with university management on clearing outstanding arrears owed to members.

Following deliberations, the congress agreed to suspend the industrial action temporarily.
“The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026,” the statement read.

The union, however, made it clear the truce is conditional.

“The Congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents,” it added.

ASUU-GSU said it is watching closely to see if the government and management will meet the October 2026 deadline. If they don’t, the suspended strike will resume.

The move averts immediate disruption to academic activities at the university, but keeps pressure on authorities to fulfil the agreements.
