Lecturers in 20 Nigerian universities are set to begin strike procedures, accusing the Federal and state governments of failing to honour the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement signed just months ago.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) authorised the move at its National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. The affected branches have been directed to first issue a 14-day ultimatum before downing tools, over what the union described as the “haphazard implementation” of the agreement and the government’s delay in releasing funds needed to make it work.
Branches in the Sokoto Zone had already issued a two-week notice.
“NEC discussed the state of the struggle and noted that a significant milestone had been reached signing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, but frowned at the haphazard implementation and lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government in the release of subvention to fully actualise the implementation of the said 2025 Agreement,” ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said in a statement on Monday.
The union also expressed concern over state-owned universities where visitors have not implemented the pact.
ASUU warned that without urgent action, the gains of the December 2025 agreement, which included a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff pay effective January 2026, will be lost.
The union said lecturers will have no option but to proceed on strike after the ultimatum expires if the issues are not addressed.
