Activities at the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba were paralysed on Friday after workers shut down the complex and declared an indefinite strike over the death of a Deputy Director.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, announced the strike during a protest at the secretariat following the death of Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Level 16 Deputy Director in the Ministry of Secondary Education.
Adeda was reported to have died on Friday at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, a day after an alleged confrontation at the secretariat.
Workers locked all entrances to the secretariat, preventing official duties and demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Announcing the action, Delta State NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, said the strike was about workers’ safety.
“We must assure workers that they are safe in their places of work. And whoever is responsible for this beating that led to his untimely death must be brought to book before we come back,” Ofobruku said.
Ofobruku said workers would remain at home until the state government guarantees their safety and ensures accountability.
The indefinite strike has grounded all government offices inside the secretariat as workers comply with the labour directive.
