Academic activities will resume at Kaduna State University on Friday after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities announced the suspension of its industrial action.
The decision, effective from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, September 18, followed a unanimous resolution by members at a congress meeting held at the university auditorium on Thursday.
The strike, which had disrupted lectures and examinations, was declared over the failure of the state government to implement the new conditions of service for academic staff.
At the heart of the dispute was the demand for the domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, which covers improved salaries, welfare and funding provisions.
The industrial action had left students stranded, with the academic calendar disrupted and final-year projects stalled, prompting several appeals from the university community and parents for a quick resolution.
The breakthrough came after Governor Uba Sani approved the implementation and domestication of the agreement, a move the union confirmed in a joint statement by its Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Silas Bakut.
“We are pleased to inform all stakeholders that the Visitor and Executive Governor of Kaduna State has approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement for Academic Staff of Kaduna State University (KASU), commencing from October 2026. Furthermore, the University Governing Council and management have approved the commencement of payment of the accrued nine-month arrears, covering the period from January to September 2026,” the statement said.
Following the approvals, the congress resolved to suspend the strike, stating, “Based on the conditions mentioned above, the Congress resolved to suspend the ongoing strike action in the branch, effective 12.01 am, 18th September, 2026.”
The union described the development as a significant step toward restoring industrial harmony, commending the government negotiation team for its dedication and the university management for not subjecting its members to threats or intimidation during the dispute, while urging students to prepare for immediate resumption.
