By Samuel Ogunsona

Lecturers at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, have paused plans to down tools, giving the Jigawa State Government until the end of October to settle welfare issues affecting university workers.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), SLUK branch, was scheduled to begin a warning strike today, September 15, 2026. But after fresh talks with a government delegation, the union agreed to hold off.

In a statement signed by the branch Chairman, Comrade Idris Chiromawa, and Secretary, Comrade Salisu Yunusa, the union said the decision was reached at a special congress on Monday, September 14, 2026, at FSMS Lecture Theatre 1.

“During the meeting, members considered the outcome of the union’s engagement with the Jigawa State Government Team,” the statement said.

The core demands on the table for workers are the full implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement and the payment of arrears that have piled up from January 2026 till now.

According to the statement, Congress agreed to give the government until the end of October 2026, as requested, to fully implement the 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement, including the settlement of all outstanding arrears accruing from January 2026 to date.

Union leaders warned that the grace period is not a withdrawal of their demands. If nothing changes, staff will withdraw their services completely.

“Should the Government refuse to address the contending issues, the Congress resolved to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike effective from the 3rd of November 2026,” the statement said.

The shift means academic activities at SLUK will continue for now, while workers wait to see if the government meets the new October deadline.
