Lecturers at Abia State University, Uturu, have something to cheer about after the university management agreed to lift the suspension of one of their colleagues following intervention by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU chapter.
The university said it had provisionally lifted the suspension of Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze from the Department of Economics. The decision was communicated in a letter dated September 3, 2026, signed by the Acting Registrar, Dr Joy Nwankwo.
According to the university, the move came after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ABSU chapter, made a written appeal on behalf of the lecturer.
The letter, titled “Lifting of Suspension,” stated, “Following a written plea from ASUU-ABSU, the University Management hereby lifts your suspension effective immediately. This lifting is, however, without prejudice to the extant investigative panel on you, whose ultimate report is being awaited.”
For many workers on campus, the case drew attention because it started with concerns about welfare. Nwaeze had earlier used his Facebook page to raise issues affecting staff, including poor pay and outstanding salaries and allowances.
Speaking on the development, the lecturer kept his response brief, saying, “Yes, the University has lifted the suspension. However, I cannot comment on the content. We are handling it administratively.”
The union’s intervention means the lecturer can return to work while the panel set up to look into the matter continues its work.
