The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau University chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over unresolved demands, including the implementation of the 2025 agreement with the Federal Government, pension scheme for members and payment of 22 months’ wage award arrears.
The union announced the industrial action after its congress meeting on Tuesday, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government. Dr Vincent Choji, Chairman of the Plateau University ASUU chapter, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Jos, saying the strike would suspend all academic activities at the university until further notice.
Choji said the decision followed the failure of the state government to address the union’s demands within the period given.
According to him, one of the major issues is the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.
The union also demanded the commencement of the contributory pension scheme for its members and the provision of safe and secure staff quarters.
Choji said ASUU was also demanding the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to improve safety on campus.
He further accused the university management of intimidating union leaders, citing a letter to the university’s congress dated May 18 and issued through the Registrar.
Another major demand, he said, was the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.
“Congress has therefore with the approval of the National Executive Council of our union, resolved to proceed on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike,” Choji said.
He directed all members of ASUU in the university to suspend academic activities until further notice.
“By this notice, all members of ASUU are hereby directed to suspend all academic activities until further notice,” he said.
