Kebbi Deploys 50 Subsidised Buses to Ease Transport Costs for Workers

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Kebbi State Government has introduced 50 new 18-seater Toyota buses as part of a targeted intervention to reduce transportation costs for workers and residents across the state.

The buses were unveiled on Thursday at the remodelled motor park in Birnin Kebbi by political leader, Mr. Umar Faruk-Buro, who stated that the initiative is designed to support daily commuters grappling with rising transport expenses.

“These buses are meant to serve the good people of Kebbi State. They will soon commence operations across different routes for the benefit of all residents, irrespective of political, religious, or ethnic affiliations,” Faruk-Buro said.

Addressing concerns about public perception, he added: “Some people do not see anything good in good efforts. The essence of procuring these buses is to support transport unions, empower drivers, and improve the lives of our people.”

He also issued operational guidelines to drivers, urging professionalism and adherence to safety standards. “Drivers must be honest, fair, and trustworthy. They should avoid picking passengers outside designated motor parks and ensure all luggage is properly screened before departure,” he warned.

Commissioner for Transport, Bala Muhammad-Gagga, explained that the buses will operate on subsidised fares to ease the financial strain on workers, many of whom allocate a significant portion of their income to transportation.

“This is a memorable day for all of us. The remodelled motor park stands as one of the best in Nigeria, and these vehicles will greatly enhance transport services in Kebbi State,” he said.

“The transport fares will be lower compared to private operators, ensuring that our people enjoy affordable and reliable transportation,” he added.

Commissioner for Physical Planning, Hayatu Bawa, emphasised the importance of sustainability, urging stakeholders to ensure proper maintenance of the fleet.

“We must use these vehicles judiciously and ensure proper maintenance so they can serve the people for a long time,” Bawa said.

The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to upgrade infrastructure and deliver public services that directly reduce the cost of living for workers and residents.
