The Federal Government has approved a review and upward adjustment of peculiar allowances for civil servants, alongside the payment of 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for officers attending approved training programmes.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during a press briefing, stating that the measures form part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving welfare and enhancing productivity across the Federal Civil Service.
According to her, the revised peculiar allowance will benefit officers on the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure. The adjustments will cut across all grade levels, with the objective of improving workers’ take-home pay.
Walson-Jack also announced that civil servants attending approved training at designated manpower development institutions will henceforth receive full DTA, irrespective of whether travel is required.
The institutions include the Public Service Institute of Nigeria, the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, and Federal Training Centres located in Lagos, Calabar, Enugu, Maiduguri, Ilorin, and Kaduna.
“This sends a clear message that government is committed to investing in its workforce, and financial inconvenience will no longer hinder professional development,” she said.
She added that other allowances, including Estacode, book allowance, and related entitlements, have also been reviewed upward in line with prevailing economic realities.
The Head of Service further revealed that the Federal Executive Council has approved a new exit benefits scheme for treasury-funded civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The scheme will provide retiring employees with 100 per cent of their total annual emoluments as additional retirement benefits, effective from 1 January 2026.
Walson-Jack also announced the operationalisation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme, designed to support civil servants who suffer work-related injuries, occupational diseases, disability, or death in service. She noted that the initiative complements the Group Life Assurance policy and strengthens social protection for workers and their families.
In addition, she disclosed a N10 billion housing loan scheme aimed at improving access to home ownership for civil servants. The scheme will be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.
She also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Executive Secretary of the Staff Housing Loans Board, Hajiya Salamatu Ahmed, to activate the housing initiative.
Walson-Jack said the reforms reflect President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of public servants and strengthening the efficiency of government institutions.
She urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to sustain collaboration in the implementation of ongoing civil service reforms.
