The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Northwest University Kano (NWU) Branch, has called on the Kano State Government and other relevant stakeholders to urgently domesticate and implement the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement on staff allowances, warning that continued delays are causing hardship for university workers and could undermine industrial harmony.
In a statement issued on Monday in Kano and jointly signed by Branch Chairperson Mansur Sa’id and Secretary Yusuf Ahmed-Gwarzo, the union expressed concern over the non-implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA), which were approved under the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.
According to the union, implementation was expected to commence in January, but little progress has been made.
ASUU-NWU said the resolution followed its congress held on June 3, during which members reviewed developments surrounding the implementation of the allowances and expressed dissatisfaction with the delay.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, NWU Branch, urges the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately domesticate and implement the provisions of the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement relating to staff allowances,” the statement said.
The union disclosed that it had written several letters to both the university administration and the Kano State Government but had yet to receive the desired response.
Speaking on the importance of the allowances, ASUU stressed that staff welfare remains critical to the stability, productivity, and growth of the university system.
The union warned that delays in implementing approved entitlements place unnecessary financial pressure on workers and lead to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action.
“Delay in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily creates hardship for staff and leads to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action,” the statement added.
The union therefore urged the Kano State Government and other stakeholders to expedite action towards the immediate implementation of the CATA and SAA.
It maintained that honouring commitments made to university employees is essential to sustaining industrial peace and advancing excellence in the higher education sector.
ASUU-NWU also acknowledged stakeholders who have continued to engage the government on staff welfare issues and encouraged them to intensify their efforts towards securing a prompt resolution.
The branch reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing confidence that the necessary action would be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students, and the wider university community.
“Prompt implementation of the allowances will help strengthen industrial harmony and enhance the overall development of the state’s higher education sector,” the statement said.
The remaining two stories (NLC/TUC on platform workers and JOHESU’s salary dispute) are lengthy enough to merit the same detailed treatment and can be edited in a continuation to preserve quality and consistency.
