The Kano State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) has announced a strict clampdown on absenteeism and negligence among health workers in secondary healthcare facilities across the state, warning that employees who abandon their duty posts will face disciplinary measures, including the forfeiture of shift and call-duty allowances.
The warning was issued on Thursday by the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mansur Mudi, following an unscheduled inspection of hospitals across Kano State aimed at assessing staff commitment and the performance of healthcare facilities.
The board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Sulaiman, disclosed this in a statement issued after the inspection exercise.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Mudi expressed concern over what he described as the growing practice of some health workers abandoning their duty posts during scheduled shifts.
According to him, such conduct is unprofessional, unethical, and poses a serious threat to patient care and service delivery.
“The board will take decisive disciplinary measures against any staff violating duty roster regulations, including the forfeiture of call or shift allowances,” he said.
Mudi added that erring personnel would also face administrative sanctions in line with civil service rules to ensure strict compliance with professional standards.
He further revealed that the Kano State Government is working towards recruiting additional healthcare professionals to address staff shortages across hospitals in the state.
However, he stressed the need for the effective and efficient deployment of existing personnel while the recruitment process is ongoing.
According to him, query letters were issued immediately to staff members found wanting during the unscheduled inspection.
The Executive Secretary also directed hospital management teams to display updated daily duty rosters in all units and departments to improve accountability and ensure compliance with work schedules.
The inspection team visited several major healthcare facilities, including Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sheikh Jidda General Hospital, and the Infectious Diseases Hospital, among others.
