Relief has returned to workers at Obudu Ranch Resort following the payment of five months’ outstanding salaries, bringing an end to months of financial hardship that culminated in a protest on 1 July.
The salary payments, which also covered outstanding allowances, began reflecting in employees’ bank accounts on Wednesday after an express directive from Governor Bassey Otu.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Obudu Ranch Resort, Sunday Michael, said the intervention underscored the administration’s commitment to worker-centred governance.
“From last night, staff started receiving alerts. The mood at the Ranch this morning is one of joy, gratitude, and renewed hope.
“His Excellency did not just make a promise; he acted immediately. This is leadership that listens and leadership that cares,” Michael said.
For many families dependent on the resort, the payments bring to an end a prolonged period of financial hardship. The Cross River State Government said clearing the salary backlog was essential to stabilising operations at the tourism facility and restoring employee morale as efforts intensify to reposition the resort.
Beyond settling the outstanding salaries, Michael disclosed that Governor Otu has directed the resort’s management to ensure salaries are paid promptly going forward to prevent a recurrence of arrears.
“This administration believes that when workers are happy, service improves, and when service improves, tourism thrives. We expect to see this reflected in the quality of hospitality at the Ranch from today onward,” he said.
