The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, has commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and working-condition issues affecting its members.
The industrial action took effect at 8:00 a.m. on Monday after the association said the hospital management failed to address its demands despite a 21-day ultimatum. The decision was reached during an emergency general meeting held on June 20, with members insisting that the strike would continue until their grievances are resolved.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the ARD President, Dr. Jesunbo Martins, and General Secretary, Dr. Toyyeb Oladipo, the association said the action became necessary following the expiration of the ultimatum earlier issued to the management.
The resident doctors also rejected a response issued by the hospital management on June 17, alleging that it misrepresented facts, previous agreements, and the current status of discussions on the outstanding issues between both parties.
Through the communiqué, the association demanded the immediate restoration of call-duty meal provisions, free issuance of identity cards, allocation of available residential accommodation, and inclusion of resident doctors in all applicable allowances.
The doctors further called for the abolition of bench fees imposed on resident doctors from accredited private teaching hospitals.
According to the association, members will sustain both the indefinite strike and peaceful protests until the management addresses their welfare concerns and meets their demands.
