The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The holiday was declared by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The announcement was contained in a statement released on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In his message, Tunji-Ojo felicitated with Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, and called on all citizens to reflect on the virtues exemplified by the Prophet.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the day to pray for peace and unity across the country, describing national cohesion as “a collective responsibility.”
He also advised that celebrations be marked with “restraint and mutual respect,” while extending wishes for “a joyous and peaceful Eid” to the Muslim community.
Tunji-Ojo further restated the government’s resolve to safeguard citizens, adding that the administration remains committed to “protecting lives and property and ensuring the sustenance of peace across the country.”
