Resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, may resume their suspended strike on August 28, 2026, if the Oyo State Government fails to meet their outstanding welfare demands.
The Association of Resident Doctors, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, announced the ultimatum on Thursday, saying the decision followed the expiration of an eight-week truce granted to the government and hospital management.
The doctors had suspended their industrial action on June 27 “in good faith” to allow for negotiations and prevent disruption of healthcare services.
With the deadline approaching, the ARD said key issues remain unresolved. The demands include the release of the Medical Residency Training Fund, implementation of the new Professional Allowance table, payment of minimum wage arrears and urgent recruitment of more resident doctors.
The association linked the looming action to worsening working conditions at the hospital.
“The Hospital is experiencing gross manpower shortages, while the inability to attract and retain resident doctors is further worsened by the prevailing welfare conditions,” the statement said.
It warned that the crisis could affect patient safety.
“This is not merely a matter of doctors’ personal comfort. The welfare of healthcare workers is intrinsically linked to patient safety, quality of care and the sustainability of healthcare services,” the doctors said.
The ARD called on the Oyo State Governor to intervene urgently to prevent another shutdown.
“We particularly appeal to the governor to safeguard the future of LTH Ogbomoso and salvage the increasingly critical situation within the institution by ensuring the prompt resolution of these outstanding welfare concerns,” it said.
While saying they prefer dialogue, the doctors noted that their restraint was wearing thin.
“Our preference remains constructive engagement, dialogue and a mutually beneficial resolution,” the association said.
