AFUSTA Lecturers Give Kebbi Government Two-Week Ultimatum, Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Issues

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA), has given the Kebbi State Government a two-week deadline to address its welfare demands or face an indefinite strike that could disrupt academic activities at the university.

The union announced the ultimatum in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the notice will run from July 31 to August 13, 2026. It warned that lecturers would begin a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike if the government failed to implement the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement, which took effect on January 1, 2026, and resolve other outstanding welfare issues affecting its members.

The position was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of ASUU-AFUSTA, Dr. Isah Musa-Fakai, and the branch Secretary, Dr. Gado Abubakar.

According to the union, the ultimatum serves as a final reminder to the Kebbi State Government, the university’s Governing Council, the management and other relevant stakeholders to address the lingering issues before the deadline expires.

The statement explained that the decision followed an interaction between the ASUU-AFUSTA branch congress and the ASUU National Visitation Team on July 30, during which members reviewed the situation at the university.

The union said that despite previous communications and engagements with the relevant authorities, the issues that led to the dispute remained unresolved.

“After extensive deliberations, it became evident that in spite of previous communications and engagements with the appropriate authorities, the issues that gave rise to our concerns remain unresolved,” the statement said.

ASUU said the branch congress unanimously resolved to issue the two-week ultimatum, effective from July 31 to August 13, and called on the university’s Governing Council and management to fully implement the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement and address all outstanding welfare issues affecting its members.

The union warned that if the demands were not met within the stipulated period, it would embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike until all outstanding issues were fully resolved.

However, ASUU stressed that industrial action remained its last resort after dialogue and constructive engagement had failed. It also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful dialogue and urged the authorities to act within the two-week period to prevent disruption of the university’s academic calendar.
