Lecturers in Ondo State are bracing for another round of industrial action, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) saying the payment of outstanding salaries alone will not prevent a planned strike across all state-owned universities.
The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of ASUU has been on an indefinite strike since 10 July over the non-payment of May and June salaries.
However, the union said the dispute has now shifted beyond salary arrears to the non-implementation of the 2025 ASUU/Federal Government agreement.
According to the AAUA ASUU Chairman, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, the branch has concluded its internal processes for the proposed industrial action and is awaiting approval from the union’s national leadership.
“We have concluded the process because the zone and national ASUU delegation have visited our branch, and we are waiting for their approval. That approval can come at any time,” Oshodi said.
He warned that the next strike would be broader in scope.
“If the government clears the May and June salaries, the battle has just begun.
“This one will be brutal because it will involve all three Ondo State-owned universities – AAUA, OAUSTECH and UNIMED. All these three universities will embark on this strike at the same time.”
Oshodi said lecturers felt shortchanged because federal universities and several state-owned institutions had already implemented the new salary structure that took effect in January 2026.
For now, the union insists it will suspend the current strike only after members receive salary alerts, rather than on the strength of government assurances.
