The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, and the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to settle outstanding pension arrears and avert industrial action.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Mubi, Adamawa State, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Abdulrahaman Ishiaka, said the agreement requires the institution’s management to remit outstanding pension contributions to Pension Fund Administrators within 21 days.
He said the arrangement is expected to promote industrial harmony, ensure institutional stability, and prevent disruptions to academic activities.
Ishiaka explained that the agreement followed extensive discussions between the management and the union aimed at reaching a lasting resolution to the pension dispute through dialogue.
He noted that previous industrial actions had adversely affected academic activities, stressing the importance of preventing similar disruptions.
“That is why we have to sit with them, even if they are wrong or right, to resolve these issues amicably in order to ensure that the agenda of the government is attainable,” he said.
The rector disclosed that both parties agreed to sign the MoU after establishing a seven-member committee, which developed the framework for resolving the matter peacefully.
“We sat and came up with an MoU between the management and the union and formed a seven-man committee that came up with the steps to follow in order to resolve the issue amicably,” he added.
Ishiaka commended ASUP members for their understanding and appealed for sustained cooperation to support the institution’s growth and development.
Also speaking, the Chairman of ASUP, Federal Polytechnic Mubi chapter, Solomon Kadala, said the institution owes staff 15 months of pension arrears.
Kadala stated that under the terms of the MoU, the management has agreed to remit pension arrears covering eight and a half months within the agreed 21-day period.
He warned that the union would embark on industrial action if the agreement was not implemented within the stipulated timeframe.
According to him, the remaining five months of pension arrears will be settled in October. (NAN)
