Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a major pay rise for cleaners working at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.

The cleaners, who were previously earning ₦15,000 monthly, will now earn ₦80,000, in line with the national minimum wage.

The approval was given on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the hospital. The development was disclosed in a statement on Friday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

According to the statement, the wage adjustment came after the cleaners approached the governor directly during his visit to the facility to plead for improved pay.

Meanwhile, Governor Makinde has appealed to members of staff currently on industrial action to return to work and allow room for dialogue.

He noted that his administration was open to resolving all outstanding issues but that progress could only be made if the strike was suspended.

“You put this government in place. The first step is for you to call off the strike, and once you assure me of that, we can move forward,” Makinde said.

He added, “This is our state; how we lay our bed is how we will lie on it.”

The state Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the government remains committed to improving the health sector and ending the cycle of strikes in the state’s health institutions.
