Borno Begins Verification of 1,066 Newly Recruited Teachers to Address School Staffing Shortages

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Borno State Government has commenced the documentation and verification of 1,066 newly recruited teachers following the release of the list of successful candidates for employment into the Borno State Senior Secondary School Education Board (BSSEB). The exercise, scheduled to run from 29 June to 11 July at the BSSEB headquarters in Maiduguri, forms part of the state’s efforts to address teacher shortages in public secondary schools and improve the quality of education.

The Board Secretary, Malah Abatcha, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday in Maiduguri. Abatcha said all successful candidates must complete the documentation and verification process before assuming duty, adding that the recruitment followed the successful conclusion of the selection exercise, including the competency test conducted on 11 April.

According to Abatcha, all successful candidates are required to report to the BSSEB headquarters within the stipulated period to complete the documentation and verification process.

Abatcha said the recruitment exercise was designed to fill critical teaching vacancies in public secondary schools across Borno State and strengthen the quality of education by ensuring that schools have the personnel needed to deliver effective teaching and learning.

Abatcha explained that the selection and deployment of successful candidates were based on staffing requirements identified through school-specific needs assessments. Priority, Abatcha added, was given to suitably qualified candidates from the local communities in which the schools are located, a move intended to support workforce stability and improve teacher retention.

The Board Secretary stressed that appointments and postings had been made strictly in line with the schools assigned to each successful candidate, warning that requests for transfers from designated duty stations would not be considered.

Abatcha further stated that candidates unwilling to serve in their assigned schools should decline the offer of employment, noting that acceptance of the appointment constitutes a commitment to work in the designated locations.

Congratulating the successful applicants, Abatcha expressed confidence that the newly recruited teachers would strengthen Borno State’s education workforce by filling critical vacancies, particularly in underserved local government areas, thereby enhancing learning outcomes across the state’s public secondary schools.
