Local government workers across Benue State have commenced a 14-day warning strike over outstanding salary payments and unremitted pension contributions.
The industrial action followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued to the state governor by the Benue State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
According to the union, repeated concerns regarding the welfare of local government workers had been consistently ignored by the state government.
“We exhausted every avenue for dialogue before resorting to this measure,” the union stated.
“Despite repeated efforts by the union to find a resolution, the Benue State Government has refused to act and dismissed all chances to prevent this outcome,” the statement added.
“We have been left with no choice but to act,” it said.
The union subsequently directed all local government employees across the state to remain at home until their demands are addressed by the government.
