Resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso are yet to receive several payments due to them, prompting the Nigerian Medical Association to seek Governor Seyi Makinde’s intervention.
The statement was contained in a letter signed by NMA President, Dr Afekhide Omoti, on Saturday.
The NMA noted that agreements on pay and welfare reached with the Oyo State Government have not been carried out, despite repeated follow-ups by the doctors.
The outstanding items, the association said, include arrears from the 2025 minimum wage, the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, adjusted professional allowances, promotion and upgrade arrears, and the call/work hour policy.
“Resident doctors constitute the first line of care in our tertiary hospitals,” the NMA stated, adding that the doctors work “long hours under intense pressure.”
The association linked the delay to risks for both staff and patients. “Burnout, excessive workload, and poor remuneration are not just welfare issues, they directly affect patient safety and health outcomes for the people of Oyo State.”
The NMA urged Makinde to personally direct that the payments be made without further delay.
“The NMA believes that implementing these agreements will immediately de-escalate tensions, restore motivation, and strengthen healthcare delivery in the state,” it wrote.
The association also praised the doctors for holding back. “The demands are legitimate, and the patience displayed by ARD LAUTECH and the Oyo NMA over the last 3 months deserves commendation,” the letter added.
It further asked the state to set up a system to track resolution of all pending issues within 30 days.
The NMA reaffirmed support for the resident doctors and said it is prepared to partner with the government to protect workers and “the citizens they serve.”
