Courts and legal services in Kwara State were disrupted on Monday as law officers in the Ministry of Justice commenced an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and unresolved salary disparities.
The industrial action was announced by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, after the state government failed to address the demands contained in a seven-day ultimatum issued to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
In a notice released in Ilorin, the association directed all members to withdraw their services with immediate effect.
Acting Chairman Kehinde Ayorinde said: “Please, take notice that LOAN, Kwara State Chapter, commences her indefinite strike action today, July 27, 2026, until the government responds to her demands.
“Members would therefore suspend all official duties till further notice,” he added.
The association said the strike is centred on longstanding welfare concerns, particularly the non-payment of statutory allowances and the failure to implement salary parity between state counsel and magistrates in the Kwara State judiciary.
According to LOAN, the government is yet to pay the outstanding balance of the 2020 furniture allowance. It also alleged that robe allowances for 2024, 2025, and 2026 remain unpaid.
In addition, the association is demanding the implementation of the approved harmonisation of salaries, allowances, and conditions of service for state counsel to bring them in line with those of magistrates.
The strike is expected to affect the delivery of legal services and the operations of the Ministry of Justice until the dispute is resolved
