The Federal Government has launched a mobile learning initiative aimed at strengthening teachers’ professional development by equipping them with new skills and expanding access to continuous training through digital technology.
The programme was unveiled on Monday with the commencement of a three-day Master Training Programme in Abuja.
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan-African University, with funding from the Government of Japan.
According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the training will run from 21 to 23 July 2026under the theme, “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.”
The initiative spans five African countries—Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Sudan—and is designed to expand access to continuous professional development for educators.
The ministry stated that the programme addresses key workplace challenges affecting teachers, including time constraints, geographical limitations, and inadequate infrastructure.
“The programme, themed ‘Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative,’is being held in Abuja from 21 to 23 July 2026.
“Funded by the Government of Japan, the UNESCO-IICBA initiative targets five African countries—Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Sudan—and seeks to expand access to quality continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers and school leaders, through flexible and technology-driven learning.”
Officials said the mobile platform would enable teachers to access training materials at any time, including offline and with minimal data usage, thereby removing longstanding barriers to professional development.
“The initiative leverages mobile technology to overcome barriers such as time constraints, geographical limitations, and inadequate infrastructure, enabling educators to access quality learning resources anytime and anywhere through a low-data, offline-friendly platform.”
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed that strengthening teachers through digital tools remains a key pillar of the government’s education reform agenda.
