The Governor Babagana Zulum administration has approved the immediate employment of 100 graduates from Biu Local Government Area as part of efforts to tackle youth unemployment and reduce social unrest in Borno State.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the governor’s visit to the Emir of Biu, Alhaji Mustapha Mustapha II, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Dauda Iliya.
The recruitment forms part of a broader employment and agricultural empowerment programme accompanying the commencement of the 2026 wet farming season and the distribution of subsidised fertiliser to smallholder and returnee farmers across Southern Borno.
Zulum said the initiative was designed to provide young people with meaningful employment opportunities and discourage their involvement in social vices and political violence. He added that larger local government areas would receive increased employment allocations.
According to the governor, each local government area in the state will have 50 graduates employed, while larger councils, including Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Bama, Askira/Uba, and Gwoza, will each have 100 beneficiaries.
The governor stressed that sustainable employment remains one of the most effective strategies for preventing the exploitation of young people for political purposes.
“We will be doing a great disservice to our youth if we allow them to continue to engage in thuggery without empowering them. You hardly find the children of prominent politicians, governors, senators, commissioners or even councillors involved in political thuggery,” he said.
For Biu Local Government Area, Zulum directed community leaders to identify 100 unemployed graduates for recruitment, giving preference to candidates with qualifications in health-related disciplines, English, Mathematics, and Physics.
“Your Royal Highness, we must address the rising cases of drug abuse, gangsterism and other social vices if we are to bequeath a better society to the next generation. We will continue to invest in our youth. I want Biu Local Government to identify 100 unemployed graduates, preferably those who studied health-related courses, English, Mathematics and Physics, especially among those involved in political thuggery, and we are ready to offer them employment opportunities,” he said.
