The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Katsina State Wing, has renewed its call on the state government to restore the 27.5 per cent teachers’ allowance suspended since 2011, saying the move would improve welfare, boost morale, and strengthen teaching standards across public schools.
The appeal was made during the union’s State Delegates Conference in Katsina, where the Chairperson of the NUT, Katsina State Wing, Rakiya Shehu-Runka, urged the government to address the long-standing issue. She noted that teachers in many other states continue to receive the allowance, while their counterparts in Katsina have been excluded for more than a decade despite repeated appeals.
Shehu-Runka, who was recently re-elected as the union’s chairperson, expressed concern over the continued suspension of the benefit, saying it had adversely affected motivation and productivity within the education sector.
According to her, restoring the allowance would help foster industrial harmony and encourage improved performance among teachers.
“The restoration of the allowance will ensure industrial harmony in the education sector. It will also motivate our teeming teachers and improve their productivity,” she said.
She nevertheless commended the administration of Governor Dikko Radda for its continued investment in education, particularly in school construction and renovation, teacher training, and recruitment.
She praised the government for recruiting 7,000 teachers and replacing a further 2,000 personnel to strengthen the state’s education workforce.
She assured members that the union would continue to prioritise teachers’ welfare, strengthen the organisation, and support initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in Katsina State.
