FG Opens Applications for Second TVET Cohort with Stipends and Certification

By Deborah Bodunde

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the commencement of applications for the second cohort of the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme, as part of efforts to strengthen skills development and improve employment outcomes for Nigerian youth.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade, the ministry confirmed that applications opened on 13 April 2026 at 4 p.m., inviting interested Nigerians to participate in the nationwide initiative.

The programme is designed to enhance technical capacity, promote entrepreneurship, and support job creation by equipping participants with industry-relevant skills aligned with labour market demands.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, described the initiative as a key component of the government’s human capital development strategy, noting that it aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

She stated that the programme seeks to prepare young Nigerians for employment and self-reliance through practical training and recognised certification.

“In strengthening this programme, the Federal Government is investing in the productive capacity of our youth. By providing practical training and recognised certification, we are creating pathways for self-employment, innovation, and long-term economic growth,” she said.

According to the ministry, the TVET programme will offer intensive six-month and one-year hands-on training in accredited centres across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Participants will receive a monthly stipend of ₦22,500 and a nationally recognised certificate upon successful completion, providing both immediate financial support and long-term employability benefits.

Training will span a wide range of sectors, including construction, ICT, automotive technology, creative media, agriculture, fashion and garment production, cosmetology, tourism and hospitality, catering services, and leather works.

The ministry further disclosed that it is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism to expand opportunities within the creative and cultural industries, reflecting a growing emphasis on the role of the creative economy in job creation.

To ensure compliance and programme integrity, attendance will be monitored through biometric verification systems, with stipends tied to active participation.

Applicants are required to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) during registration and must commit to full participation throughout the training period.

The ministry urged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the programme, noting that skills acquisition remains critical to addressing unemployment and strengthening workforce readiness in an evolving economy.
