Lagos Bolt Drivers Decry Unsustainable Fares and Rising Costs, Demand Urgent Reforms

By Mariam Aligbeh

App-based drivers operating on the Bolt platform in Lagos have raised serious concerns over what they describe as poor working conditions and unsustainable fares, stating that the current system is crippling their ability to earn a decent livelihood.

The drivers, under the aegis of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), said on Friday that rising fuel prices, high vehicle maintenance costs and other operational expenses have significantly increased the cost of working, while fares on the platform have remained largely static.

In a press statement, the union’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Steven Iwindoye, said the situation has left many drivers struggling financially despite working long hours daily. According to Mr Iwindoye, deductions such as platform commissions and other operating costs often leave drivers with a meagre income.

“This situation is not only unfair, but it also threatens the livelihood and dignity of thousands of hardworking drivers who depend on this work to support their families,” he said.

Mr Iwindoye also noted that beyond financial challenges, drivers are contending with other issues on the platform, including safety concerns, sudden account deactivations, and policies introduced without proper consultation with the drivers’ community.

He explained that drivers had attended several meetings and discussions in the past, hoping for meaningful solutions, but that many of those engagements had not resulted in practical improvements.

“At this critical moment, drivers are demanding real reforms, fair pricing structures, transparent policies and stronger protection for those who power the platform,” Mr Iwindoye stated.

The AUATON spokesman also called for unity among drivers and urged them to be cautious about a proposed roundtable meeting until there is clear evidence that such an engagement would lead to genuine solutions.

“The voice of drivers must not be ignored, and their concerns must be treated with the seriousness they deserve,” he added.
