LIRS Offers Employers Extra Time, Shifts Annual Tax Filing Deadline to February 7

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has extended the deadline for employers to file their annual tax returns, offering additional time for compliance.

Under the revised schedule, employers now have until 7 February 2026 to submit their returns. The extension, according to the agency, is intended to give employers adequate time to properly organise their tax affairs and ensure accuracy in their submissions.

In a statement, LIRS said the decision was taken to provide relief and minimise errors that may arise from rushed filings, while still emphasising the importance of compliance.

“We urge employers to prioritise the timely filing of their annual returns, noting that compliance should be embedded as a routine business practice,” said Dr. Ayodele Subair, Executive Chairman of LIRS.

The tax authority also reiterated that tax returns must be filed electronically, stressing that manual submissions are no longer accepted. Employers are therefore required to submit their annual returns exclusively through the LIRS eTax portal.

Dr. Subair described the platform as “secure, user-friendly, and accessible 24/7,” and advised employers to ensure that the Tax Identification Number (TIN) of every employee is accurately captured in their filings.

Reinforcing the agency’s position, he emphasised that employers must give priority to the timely filing of their annual returns to avoid penalties and ensure full compliance with tax regulations.
