Kano Governor Vows to Sack Officials Who Sell Empowerment Items Meant for Grassroots Workers

By Samuel Ogunsona

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has vowed to remove any political appointee found guilty of selling empowerment materials intended to support grassroots workers and small-scale operators.

The governor gave the warning on Monday at the 12th empowerment scheme of the lawmaker representing Kano South, Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila.

Yusuf, who was represented at the event by the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Umar Haruna Doguwa, said the intervention was targeted at improving the livelihood of party workers at the local level and boosting self-employment.

He warned that the items were not for resale, but to help beneficiaries sustain their businesses.

“Whoever sold this intervention will go with his position; I will personally sack him. It is meant for your welfare, not selling, especially party leaders,” Yusuf said.

He charged the beneficiaries, who are mostly local artisans, tailors and grassroots mobilisers, to put the tools to proper economic use.

According to the governor, the initiative was designed to strengthen small businesses and promote self-reliance among workers at the ward and local government levels.

At the programme, 16 vehicles were allocated to APC local government chairmen in the district, while 400 motorcycles went to party executives.

For workers in the tailoring value chain, 200 beneficiaries received three sewing machines each, comprising two regular machines and one industrial machine, to enable them to expand their businesses, employ others and train more people.

Speaking, Senator Sumaila said the empowerment was part of efforts to repay the trust of his constituents and address economic hardship.

He noted that similar interventions had been carried out in security, roads, agriculture, education, health and water supply across Kano South.
