ASUU-JOSTUM Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salary Arrears

By Samuel Ogunsona

Academic activities at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), have been grounded following an indefinite strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), JOSTUM chapter.

The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday after a congress held on August 12, 2026, at the Science Lecture Theatre, South Core of the university.

Tagged “No-Pay-No-Work,” the strike takes immediate effect and will affect all academic operations at the institution.

According to the ASUU-JOSTUM Chairperson, Terseer Abari, the decision was in line with the resolution reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting of August 8 and 9.

The union said the strike would remain in place until all outstanding salary components owed to its members are paid.

“For emphasis, there shall be no teaching, student’s supervision, examinations, statutory meetings and any other academic activity during the period of this strike, until the University pays all outstanding salaries of members of the Union,” the statement said.

ASUU-JOSTUM explained that only two of the four salary components agreed under the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU deal have been paid to date.

The chairperson called on the relevant authorities to settle the outstanding arrears to allow normal academic activities to resume at the university.
