The Yobe State Government has approved the payment of three key academic allowances for lecturers at Yobe State University, Damaturu, in a move aimed at improving staff welfare, strengthening workforce motivation, and promoting academic excellence.
The approved allowances are the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, who disclosed that payment of the allowances will commence in August.
According to Mohammed, the approval followed the submission of a report by a fact-finding committee established by the state government to review the welfare and remuneration package of academic staff at the university.
He explained that the committee visited selected state-owned universities across the country to benchmark staff welfare packages and identify best practices that could be adopted in Yobe State.
The institutions visited included Bauchi State University, Kaduna State University, and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State.
Mohammed said the approval is in line with the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement.
He noted that the allowances are expected to improve lecturers’ welfare, boost staff morale, and enhance teaching, research, and overall academic performance at the institution.
The Governor’s aide added that the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, had earlier received the committee’s report and commended its members for conducting a comprehensive review.
The approval comes amid growing calls by university lecturers in several states for the implementation of the financial provisions of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement, including the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, Earned Academic Allowance, and Professorial Allowance, as part of efforts to improve conditions of service and strengthen staff retention in Nigeria’s public universities.
