The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has called for enhanced security measures in schools following the rescue of teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state. While welcoming the victims’ safe return, the union stressed that governments at all levels must intensify efforts to ensure schools remain secure environments for teaching and learning.
In a statement jointly signed by the union’s Chairman, Fatai Hassani, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, on Saturday in Ibadan, the NUT commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Oyo State Government led by Governor Seyi Makinde, and security agencies for their roles in securing the victims’ release.
The union described the successful rescue as a source of immense relief for teachers, pupils, parents, and other stakeholders in the education sector, while renewing its call for stronger security around schools to prevent similar incidents.
According to the statement, the abduction was a difficult test for the education community, but teachers across Oyo State remained steadfast, united in prayer, and hopeful for the safe return of their colleagues and the pupils.
The NUT also applauded security agencies for their professionalism, courage, and commitment, noting that their coordinated efforts were instrumental in the successful rescue operation.
It added that the operation had reinforced public confidence, particularly within the education sector, in the ability of security agencies to protect lives and respond effectively to security threats.
The union further expressed appreciation to its national and regional leadership, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), the media, civil society organisations, the international education community, and other Nigerians for their prayers, solidarity, and support throughout the victims’ captivity.
While celebrating the successful rescue, the NUT urged governments at all levels to strengthen security across schools and surrounding communities to forestall a recurrence. It maintained that every child has the right to learn in a safe environment and that every teacher should be able to carry out their professional responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of education workers and learners, the union pledged to continue collaborating with government and other stakeholders to promote safe schools and quality education. It expressed confidence that the incident would strengthen ongoing efforts to protect lives, enhance school security, and secure the future of Nigerian children.
