The Lagos State Council of Chairmen’s Wives Association has extended its monthly grassroots empowerment initiative to Amuwo-Odofin, providing women and vulnerable residents with resources aimed at strengthening livelihoods and promoting sustainable income generation.
The programme, held at the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Secretariat, featured the distribution of vocational equipment alongside direct financial assistance to selected beneficiaries.
Recipients were presented with sewing machines, grinding machines, and hair dryers to support their economic activities. In addition, 15 residents received grants of N150,000 each to enable them to establish or expand small businesses.
The empowerment scheme operates on a needs-based selection model and is rotated across local government areas every month to ensure broader coverage and equitable access to support.
“We go to different local governments every month. Today is the turn of Amuwo-Odofin. We actually went out to identify people who genuinely need these items and this support,” said Omolara Sanusi, Chairperson of the Lagos State Council of Chairmen’s Wives Association.
Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Chairman, Lanre Sanusi, linked the council’s involvement in the initiative to recent reforms granting financial autonomy to local governments.
According to him, greater control over resources has enabled councils to invest directly in people-centred programmes that enhance household incomes and strengthen community resilience.
The outreach programme is designed to reduce dependency and provide residents with practical means of earning a living and supporting their families, thereby contributing to grassroots economic development and skills-based employment.
