The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is mourning Domingo Adeleke, a Lagos trade unionist who died on Monday in Geneva while representing Nigerian workers at the 114th International Labour Conference.
Adeleke, Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council and a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, reportedly took ill briefly during the conference. His death highlights the personal sacrifices many labour leaders make to defend workers’ rights on global platforms.
The NLC’s Assistant General Secretary, Chris Onyeka, said Adeleke carried the struggle for decent work to the very end. The congress leadership travelled to a hospital in Annemasse, France, to pay their respects as plans begin for his repatriation.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the NLC family, and all comrades across Lagos state. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his commitment to workers’ rights continue to inspire us. Rest on, comrade! Your fight lives on,” Onyeka said.
The NLC noted that Adeleke’s commitment reflects the wider fight of Nigerian workers who push for better conditions despite challenges, both at home and abroad.
