Skills Gap: Urgent Reforms Needed in Nigeria’s Civil Service, Says Walson-Jack

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) to strengthen staff welfare, enhance workplace safety, and boost productivity across the federal civil service.

The scheme was unveiled on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of the ECS Help Desk by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack.

Speaking at the event, Walson-Jack said the initiative is designed to provide timely support and compensation to civil servants affected by work-related injuries, diseases, disabilities, or death. She explained that the ECS would reinforce existing welfare programmes while extending protection to public servants and their families, reflecting the administration’s commitment to workforce protection.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by Mr. Eno Olotu, Director of Press and Public Relations in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

Walson-Jack described the ECS as a “strategic intervention,” noting that it would complement existing initiatives such as the Group Life Assurance Scheme to deliver broader employee coverage.

She further announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed between the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) to ensure effective implementation.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseyi Faleye, said the ECS marks a significant step towards institutionalising structured care and protection for civil servants. He explained that the scheme would operate on a transparent, payroll-based system to ensure accountability.

Faleye added that the ECS Help Desk would function as a central support hub, providing information, processing claims, and receiving feedback to improve service delivery.

He noted that the rollout represents a milestone in strengthening workforce protection and building a more responsive and efficient civil service.
