Kano Assembly Orders Probe into Teachers’ Recruitment Over Alleged Irregularities

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Kano State House of Assembly has ordered a comprehensive review of the recent teachers’ recruitment exercise conducted by the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), following allegations of irregularities in the process.

The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday after lawmakers raised concerns over the treatment of applicants, the location of interview centres, and the overall transparency of the exercise. The Assembly also constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter and summon SUBEB officials to account for the conduct of the recruitment.

The move followed a motion of urgent public importance presented by Mr. Murtala Musa (APC – Dambatta), who described the process as flawed and said it had generated widespread complaints across the state.

Speaking during the session, Musa stated that many applicants were assigned to interview centres far from their places of residence, creating undue hardship. He added that earlier recommendations intended to guide the recruitment exercise were disregarded, raising concerns about fairness and accountability.

Musa, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the relevant committee, said the Assembly acted in response to numerous complaints from stakeholders. He noted that key local education stakeholders were excluded from the process despite their critical roles.

He further highlighted the economic burden imposed on applicants and prospective teachers, warning that postings outside their local government areas could lead to absenteeism.

“If a teacher is recruited from Doguwa and posted to Warawa, the cost of commuting may lead to absenteeism,” Musa said.

Seconding the motion, Deputy Speaker Mr. Muhammad Bello (APC – Rimingado) expressed support for teacher recruitment but insisted that the process must be transparent and merit-based. He urged SUBEB to establish clear cut-off marks and eliminate political interference.

Bello also recommended that teachers be posted within their local government areas to enhance efficiency and accountability in schools.

Presiding over the session, Speaker Mr. Jibril Falgore announced the formation of an ad hoc committee to investigate the recruitment exercise. The committee is expected to summon the SUBEB Chairman to defend the process and address the concerns raised by lawmakers.
