NSIB Introduces New Conditions of Service to Enhance Workforce Performance and Welfare

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has introduced a newly approved Conditions of Service (CoS) framework aimed at improving staff welfare, boosting performance, and strengthening safety outcomes across Nigeria’s transportation sector.

The framework was inaugurated on Friday in Abuja by the Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh, who said the initiative is designed to enhance operational efficiency within the agency.

Announcing the development, Badeh stated that the revised Conditions of Service clearly define employees’ rights, responsibilities, and career pathways, while aligning the bureau with global best practices in accident investigation. He added that the framework is expected to foster a more motivated workforce and improve organisational effectiveness as Nigeria’s sole multimodal accident investigation body.

He described the document as more than an administrative guide, referring to it as “a collective covenant” that outlines professional expectations for all staff. According to him, it introduces structured systems for appointments, promotions, and training opportunities to support career progression.

Badeh further noted that the framework establishes transparent disciplinary procedures and incorporates comprehensive welfare provisions, including leave entitlements, medical services, allowances, and performance-based incentives. These measures, he said, are designed to promote accountability while recognising diligence and integrity.

“The Conditions of Service guarantees that diligence, integrity, and commitment will be recognised and rewarded,” he stated, adding that the policy is intended to cultivate a disciplined and high-performing workforce.

The Director General also linked the initiative to broader reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the bureau’s recent restructuring to report directly to the Presidency will reinforce its independence and enhance its ability to fulfil its mandate effectively.

Badeh urged staff members and union leaders to study and fully adopt the new Conditions of Service, which takes immediate effect, as part of efforts to build a more efficient and globally competitive institution.
