Boost for Worker Welfare as NSITF, Lagos Align on Statewide Compensation Framework

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has declared its readiness to support the Lagos State Government in implementing the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) to safeguard workers across the state.

The Managing Director of NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, at his office. Both parties discussed immediate steps towards implementation and strategies to enhance worker welfare.

Mr. Faleye explained that the visit was intended to establish a clear and structured plan for rolling out the scheme in Lagos. He noted that the initiative would provide compensation and protection for employees in cases of workplace injury, disease, disability, or death. He added that the move aligns with the state’s THEMES+ development agenda, and would strengthen workplace safety while improving service delivery across government institutions.

During the meeting, Mr. Faleye assured the state government of NSITF’s full support, including technical onboarding, advisory services, and sensitisation across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Local Government Areas (LGAs), and public institutions. He also outlined support for claims processing, compensation administration, and occupational safety interventions.

“We would like to assure you of our full readiness to support Lagos State,” he said, adding that the agency is seeking alignment on appointing a coordinating ministry, nominating a focal person, and convening a joint technical session within the next two weeks.

Mr. Faleye observed that Lagos, with its large and complex workforce and strong administrative systems, requires a structured approach to ensure successful implementation of the scheme. He described the ECS as a framework that not only manages employer liabilities, butalso strengthens safety standards and protects workers.

In response, Mr. Agoro thanked the NSITF team for the visit, andconfirmed that the state is prepared for full implementation of the scheme. He revealed that a dedicated unit has already been established to oversee the process.

He described the ECS as a laudable initiative that would significantly improve the standard of living for workers in the state. Mr. Agoro also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to working closely with NSITF to ensure efficient and proactive service delivery for public servants.
