NLC, TUC Plan Solidarity Rally in Abuja in Support of Striking FCTA Workers

By Samuel Ogunsona

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced plans to stage a solidarity rally in Abuja on Tuesday, February 3, in support of workers in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) who have been on an indefinite strike since January 19.

The strike was triggered by the non-payment of salaries, outstanding promotion arrears, and poor working conditions.

Despite efforts by the FCT authorities to obtain a court order restraining the unions from continuing the industrial action, the labour centres said they would stand firm in solidarity with the affected workers.

“We will not abandon our members,” the unions declared.

“This struggle is not only justifiable, legitimate, and non-negotiable, but it is necessary and urgent, and we shall sustain the struggle until justice is done to the workers.”

The NLC and TUC have directed all affiliates and state councils within the FCT to mobilise massively and participate fully in the peaceful rally.

“To workers in FCTA, we say you are not alone,” the unions said. “We will not abandon you. No retreat, no surrender.”

The labour centres stressed that the struggle is rooted in justice, fairness, and respect for labour rights, urging members to remain steadfast and united in the defence of their interests.

“The labour movement stands firm, and no one should underestimate or undermine that resolve,” they warned.

The solidarity rally is expected to be a peaceful demonstration of the unions’ commitment to the workers’ cause and a show of strength in the face of adversity.

Details of the convergence points and time, the unions added, will be communicated to members through their respective affiliates.
